diy Modular.
'Here's a clip of the performance synth I built over the summer of 2011. I just added an awesome rhythm section prototype circuit based on Eric archers amazing andromeda drum modules. The drum sequencer is basically just two CD4089 binary rate multipliers. I added a CD4024 binary counter for making more complex rhythm sequences and also added a CD40106 for inverting various signals to put everything in phase.'

New Moon
A realtime modular synthesizer piece. Ambient drone with pitched tones. Faster sequences done with two CGS01 sub oscillator/harmonic sequencer modules. A third CGS01 was used for subharmonic drone sounds.
The background drone is a single Oakley vco. One channel is saw wave through an Oakley Discontinuity wavefolder, to an Ian Fritz 5 Pulser, to a J Haible Tau Phaser and finally into a DD400 digital delay. The second portion of the drone is the same Oakley vco's sine wave out into a CatGirl Synth CGS01 sub oscillator. I pulled up some sub octaves to send through a Synthetic Sound Labs 1310 digital delay which was voltage controlled by a MegaOhm Audio LFO2.
Other static repeating sequences are various voices from Q960, Q119, STG time suite and Moon 554 & 563.
The faster broken repeating line in the mid section is a third CGS01 in harmonic sequencer mode. I got the control voltages from another MegaOhm Audio LFO2 which was reset synchronized to itself. The lower LFO section sent a slow square wave into the upper section which was a faster triangle wave. This output along with the slower sine wave out went to the CGS01. The output B of the CGS01 was mixed with a B output from another CGS01 with faster subdivisions and sent through a vca which was lfo controlled. This set up a varying fast and slow pattern which repeated due to the sync of the LFO2 against the vca filtered 2nd CGS01. All voltages from the CGS01's were sent through several Q171 quantizers before going to the vco's.
The patch utilized a variation on an idea from Hans Munz (a.k.a consumed) in a muffwiggler topic from a few years back. Essentially it was an FM and AM patch and you can see me mixing in the AM into it and changing the AM octave properties on the Q106 vco.
FX included Strymon ElCapistan, Blue Sky, Lexicon MX200, Behringer DD400 and TC Electronics D-Two.
The Oakley vco, discontinuity wavefolder and 5 Pulser were all vc modified from an Ian Fritz ChaQuO chaos generator oscillator. A subtle but big effect there.

Modularized Oberheim Double SEM System
A short demo of a custom double-SEM + two associated patchbays in one wooden cabinet. These SEMs has been slightly modified (some of its control ranges has been enhanced) and the patchbays (one per SEM) exteriorize all the inputs/outputs/controls of the SEM structure. In addition, some extra features has been added in the patchbays area, such as an inverter, a modulation VCA, a 2x4 multiple, and several amount pots of external control signals.
The patchbays' panels were hand-made manufactured, and they were painted and serigraphied in the same style as the SEMs colour and graphics.
All the work (except the custom wood cabinet) was made by Synthoma ( www.synthoma.net )

Synth-Tard Interviews Ryan from BABYDICK
the SynthTard (-Me-) interview with Ryan from BABYDICK.
I have no memory of how, when, or where I met Ryan many years ago but I do know it was before his band, with Hedona, Dicko, and Jeffro, The ROCKBUSTERS, totally exploded here in Austin, and had everyone singing along to such hits as 'suck my dick', and 'life in the fat lane'. As Many of You know, I'm a life long die hard fan of Russel and Sean and all things FUCKEMOS. Their new band, BABYDICK, is My favorite band in town, hands down. I decided to interview Ryan for my geeky synthesizer blahh-g, and send it to my friend Chad of Whoopsy Magazine to publish or throw away or use as toilet paper, what you can't do that with an email. can you? hmmm. Bringing this idea up led me to the sad news that Ryan is leaving the band, his last show with Babydick is set for the CAVITY REUNION at the BROKEN NECK. 9-23-11.
No, I don't get to be their new synthtard, yes, of course I asked. That slot has been filled.
so first of all , Thanks Ryan, this is a super geeky blah-gg about synthesizers, so I must start with the obligatory gear PRON questions. You play an Alesis Micron through some giant stack. details please...
R:Alesis Micron through a PV bass pre, Behringer Virtualizer 2024, Alesis 3630 Comp, Nady XA-900, into a PV 2-15 PA cab.
explain why you're leaving the band.
R:I quit because Rusty refuses to do Joe Walsh's 'In The City.' I don't suffer fools who so willingly commit career suicide.
do you recycle?
R:I'm a lapsed Unitardian. I recycle religiously. Bottles, cans, and idears.
do you think Dick Cheney is a Reptarded Alien?
R:Who knows? Dick knows. Dick shot a man in the face & made him apologize to Dick. Power like that makes me hard
favorite Babydick show?
R: Fave BD show? Whoopsy's SXSW gigs. Power like that makes me tumescent.
do you own any heat vision goggles?
R: No heat vision goggles but I do have one taped nipple. Shiny. Black. Electricians. Taped.
what do you do in real life? or make something up because it's none of anyone's business.
R:I work in a harshly lit, ice cold, Man In The Gray Flannel Suit-esque 200 x 100 yard cube farm, facing a windowless corner with huge blank white walls on which hangs nothing but one tiny rectangle of diamond plate aluminum with a single bullet hole put in it's center by William S Burroughs. I'm the new Charles Ives. Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer true..
do you have any superpowers other than Bass and Synthesizer?
R: Stupor-powers? I'm not your average horticulturist.
discuss the experience of writing or learning songs with Russell. or not.
R: Rusty's a lyrical miracle. He rarely suggests, but always approves/denies riffs. Rusty in 4 words: great ears, sotto voce.
do you know where strawberry milk comes from?
R: Strawberry milk comes from the female carton in that Coffee & TV video. She's with the angels now.
do you believe in cheese? i heard it was a hoax.
R: Yo creo con queso. Thick, gooey, golden globules of melted molten mancheco graciously glide gulletward.
your favorite animal ever, personal pet, or famous.
R: My Maine Coon Bob. He showed up at the back door half dead from sinus mofungo. He blew thick, gooey, green snot rockets the size of Bic Pens all over the house until antibiotics cleared it up a coupla months later. The only cat I've had that ran down squirrels for catch & release kicks. Spastic & the size of a small dog. A great furr-son. RIP Bob.
is this getting annoying yet?
R: Not annoying. Yet.
will you be doing any solo synthesizer or other music in the future?
R:When the day job work slows down years in the distant future, I'll get reacquainted with my Electribes. I'll do some electro-c&w along the lines of Chip & Tony from Rank and File's Blackbird project. They did a fine high & lonesome cover of Kraftwerk's Neon Lights. A hi-tech redneck thing & call it Loose Livestock.
add one more thing.
R: One more thing? Find a high look out spot downtown. Spend several nights &/or days looking down, observing how cops catch people. Notice how beat & riot cops walk up to a corner, stop before rounding it & peek around the corner looking up the block or down the alley. Sneaky & smart. Cops train to not walk around a corner out into the open & put themselves in view of whoever is up the block/down the alley. Next time you wanna have a little chat in the alley, do some non-sanctioned exploring, or throw a brick at a Klan rally, whatever, think about where to not place yourself. Frustration is the mother of crime.
Thank You sir, rock, er Synth on.

Here's a video that I did on the landing of the apartment where I stay. I wanted to show the somewhat portable nature of the MacBeth Mk1 modules in action. What you see here is 8 Mk1 modules sitting on a music stand. I'm using a Korg Prophecy as a keyboard controller and the sound is blended with ping-pong echo! Musically- well, it's not much- but it does give you an impression of what could be done outside of the studio
Teenage Girl had anoise band in the 30s -
http://www.regurgitron.com/grandma.htm
As far as I can tell, there's no written record of the first noise band, however, a couple transcription discs and a few wire recordings are said to exist - along with some blurry rumors and ancient rural folk tales. So, how did a teenage girl start the first noise band back in the 1930's and is she still living among us today? I spent quite a bit of time researching the possibility and here's what I came up with:
gramophone
The Great Depression
In 1933, "Grandma" was typical of most 11 to 13 year old girls. She lived in a small midwest town and was part of a poor rural family. Like most, she struggled during the Great Depression. Money was scarce, jobs almost nonexistent, and an overall feeling of hopelessness prevailed especially in what was then known as the "dustbowl". And, yet, from this impoverished setting, would come a form of entertainment that was decades ahead of its time.
Although the stories are sketchy, it seems that around 1933, a young girl, we'll call "Grandma" comes across a discarded radio on the side of a dirt road - probably the victim of a pothole which dislodged it from its baggage carrier. It's a strong possibility, as many families back then packed up everything they owned and drove to California to find work. The radio was typical of that era, a wood enclosure with rudimentary tube electronics that enabled it to receive and amplify AM and shortwave signals. This was a significant find as Grandma's family didn't have a radio. The legend then says that Grandma made her way home to the tin roofed shack that her family of 10 shared. She plugs in the radio only to find that it doesn't work. No sound comes from it at all, but she notices that the tuning dial lights up, so she believes that it "sort of" works. She decides that she'll fix it and then her family will be able to listen to radio shows and get the news. They'll be able to hear President Roosevelt himself as he speaks to the struggling nation and unveils his "New Deal".
antique noise meters
Proto Circuit Bending
Grandma opens up the radio. She's looking at a complete mystery. Wires, tubes, strange metal objects, and other stuff, for lack of a better term, inhabit this wooden box. Bewildered by this proto-electronic maze, she shakes her head. What's Grandma to do? Well, folklore describes her poking around in the radio for hours, then days. First with sticks and twigs, then with metal, possibly bicycle wheel spokes or something similar. Remember, this is "depression era" rural USA, tools and supplies are very hard to come by.
Not one to be discouraged, and who of the "greatest generation" was ever easily discouraged, Grandma worked intensely. She stopped at nothing to get her radio working, bridging connections with wheel spokes and other found objects. She connected things that she thought needed to be connected. It's even said that Grandma got her hands on a crank phone and other trashed radios and then added their parts to her prized device.
Weeks went by as Grandma became even more obsessed with fixing her radio. Finally, all her efforts paid off. The results of pure luck, crude experimentation, childhood curiosity, and home-grown American ingenuity were heard by Grandma as a blistering noise spewed from the partially functioning radio's speaker. She turned the tuning knob which unveiled a deep palate of noise flavors from a shearing wash to gurgles and static pops. Keep in mind that this is 1933, and Grandma has essentially circuit bent a radio some 34 years before Reed Ghazala - or so the legend has it.
A New Deal - of Noise
Grandma had turned a broken radio into a radical noisemaker and although that wasn't her goal, she was proud nonetheless. She would lose herself for hours on end playing with her new noisemaker. She was constantly filling her family's small shack with all kinds of distressful noise. Later, she began to "entertain" her family by putting on Vaudeville inspired shows where she would pretend to be all kinds of new and wonderful characters. These "characters" would touch the insides of the radio which belted out all kinds of different flavors of noise as they sang and danced, sometimes in a seizure like fashion. After a few shows, her family would have no more of this mess. They pressured Grandma to dismantle her creation and go back to school, but it was too late. Grandma had been bitten by the "noise bug" and there was no going back. Grandma took her noisemaking radio and ran away.
Legend has it that she made her way to Chicago, playing gigs wherever she could. Sometimes at general stores or bars. Sometimes outside on street corners. Though she did generate quite a bit of attention, her shows were never that well received. One story tells of a small crowd in Kansas City that is seen throwing rotting vegetables at a teenage girl who carried a loud radio. Other similar tales crop up in parts of Nebraska, Missouri, Kentucky and Illinois during the mid and late 1930's. There was even talk of Alan Lomax types of field recordings being made of a young woman who "played" a radio back in 1937. Then, nothing.
No More Noise Deal
Information about Grandma and her noise band stops around 1941. Why? Did the US entry into World War II have something to do with it? What did Grandma do as part of the war effort? Was she a nurse in the Army? Was she part of the USO? Or did she just get married and "settle down"? Did she have any children? Is she still living among us? We may never know. But, we do know this, Grandma had a noise band in the 1930's and she is said to have spewed out a noise of such wholesome goodness that only a Grandma could make. If you have any further information about Grandma and her noise band, please contact me.

Pioneering '50s Synthesizer unearthed in French Barn
Oramics from Nick Street on Vimeo.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/13/kraftwerk-who-pioneering-50s-synthesizer-unearthed-in-french/
So there Dr. Mick Grierson was, wandering around a French barn, minding his own business when all of a sudden he happened upon an antique: one of the earliest modern synthesizers. Grierson, a professor at Goldsmiths University in London did what any expert in the field of electronic music would do, and whisked it back to the motherland for restoration. The Oram "Oramics" Synthesiser (sic) was built by Daphne Oram in 1957, a year before she co-founded the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to research and develop electronic music. Political wrangling within the corporation forced her to leave in 1959, and she retreated to a farm in nearby Kent to tinker with her invention. After her departure, the Workshop shot to fame for creating the original electronic theme to Doctor Who. In order to create music on the Oram, a composer painted waveforms directly onto 35mm film strips which were fed into the machine. Inside, photo-electronic cells read the light pattern and interpreted it as sound. Check out the video to see the arrival of the machinery back into England where it'll be on display all the way through December 2012. If you're really interested you can tap Dr Grierson's homebrewed Oramics iPhone app (linked below for your downloading pleasure) to create your own futuristic theme songs, '57-style.

based on the true story of Betty and Barney Hill, this hard to find, made for TV film, brought the alien abduction scenario to the masses. Before you dismiss their story, it must be acknowledged that Betty correctly identified Zeti Reticuli as a binary star system -from a map 'they ' showed her- a few years before mainstream astronomy discovered that to be true. this film shows up on the internet and disappears from time to time. it's not for sale or available anywhere. Large amounts of money went into the budget, leading some to speculate about involving government disinformation. watch it while You can. soon after this, James Earl Jones went on to become DARTH VADER . - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhlWqMam4ew&feature=related -

MOOG MiniMoog Voyager XL Demo
I got to mess around with one of these for a few moments, I think I prefer the Little Phatty or the Old School MiniMoog

Mindflex / Teletron first set up
'The Mindflex (big white thing), "reads" your brainwaves which then controls the voltage of a small fan. This voltage can be used to control the pitch of many analog instruments. In this video I'm controlling the pitch of a circuit bent Leap Frog Alphabet Pal, then I'm using an Alesis GuitarFX to effect the tone. Off camera I am wearing the headset that reads my brain activity. I'm also reading Webster's Pocket Computer Dictionary (1997).
Near the end you can hear what it sounds like without any post effects, the blue box will read "CO".'

Chad Allen from Switched On Austin helping Me learn some more Modular Synthesis
If You are not interested in Modular Analogue Synthesizers, this might not be super exciting for You, but it's something I am clearly interested in learning more about. My friend Chad Allen from Switched On Austin was kind enough to come over and sit down and do some patching with Me, as This Synth Tard still has so much to Learn. I filmed quite a bit of footage, because I want to absorb as much as possible. I will be putting all of what I filmed on Here for reference. It's not any sort of professional thing, just some more synth stuff to learn about. Through the course of the day, We Plugged in an older AKAI Keyboard as a Midi source, Then we plugged in The Thereguin, The Moog MG-1, and some music from the mactop all into the Instrument interface. Fun and Educational, Thanks Again, Chad. SWITCHED ON FOR LIFE! eternally grateful.
